Dogs have had an enormous impact on my life. My first dog, my best friend, shaped my personal development and worldview. I relied on him for emotional support during my critical childhood and early adult development years. Owning a pet is an emotional experience. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to support another living creature.
Symbiotically, they provide a level of care often taken for granted. Giving back to someone who can't give to you in human ways is transformative. Dog training, grooming, and exercise provide a template of practices we can apply to our everyday lives.
I'm not over any of my dogs. I have a lot of work to do around letting go of the comfort they provided me. While I was in the hospital recovering from seizures and breaking my ankle, it was my dog sitting with me while I was lying in bed.
He didn't bark. He just held space I couldn't have for myself. I was struggling mentally and emotionally with an identity crisis, and taking him out for walks, sitting with him on the couch, and projecting all of my emotions onto him—essentially making him human. A lot of therapy without saying much. Dogs can heal us, often doing more for us than we can do for ourselves.
My beloved dog and emotional support warrior passed away two months ago. I miss him immensely.
